Marcel Duchamp was a brilliant artist and thinker who really made people question what art is. He did something bold and a bit shocking to the people who decide what art is. He took a urinal, called it “Fountain,” and signed it “R. Mutt 1917. To hide his identity to that art critic can judge the work no him” It was like he was daring them to say it wasn’t art.
I did something similar. I took an old abandoned urinal from my university campus backyard and added newspaper strips to it. The text on the strips pretends the several criticques, discussions that art critics and writers have had about what makes art, art. This changed the way we think about art completely.
By choosing the same kind of object, I’m honoring Marcel Duchamp and the big impact he had on art.
