This installation brings to life an idea I’ve had since I was six years old. In 1994, I watched a documentary about the Golden Gate Bridge on TV. The scale and construction of the bridge started to fascinate me.
As a child, I loved playing with various materials in our 168-square-foot basement. My father worked in the textile industry, so our house was always filled with colorful threads and fabric. I also used my grandfather’s carpentry tools, like hammers, a wood saw, and a box of old nails.
The image of the bridge stayed with me. In 1997, I asked my father for wooden sticks and a metal chain to build a small model of the bridge. The next day, he brought me everything I needed, and I, a ten-year-old boy, started building the bridge from memory.
Fast forward to 2009, in my first year of BFA, I decided to recreate the bridge using thread for a 3D studio assignment.
The two brick walls in my installation symbolize key moments: the tall wall represents my inspiration (journey from a 2-dimensional screen to 3-dimensional) from 1994, and the other wall symbolizes my first attempt in 1997. In 2009, I reimagined the bridge with delicate materials, turning a childhood memory into a tangible form.
