From the Cross to the Stage, 2022

Berlin, Germany

The work is inspired by the writing by Esther Fernández so the explanation & the title were borrowed from “From the Cross to the Stage: Divine Puppets and Spectacular Saints in Spanish Culture” a scholarly article by Esther Fernández. In this work, Fernández explores the fascinating connection between puppetry and religion in Spanish culture. Specifically, she delves into the use of jointed Christ figures called “Cristos articulados” during Hispanic Catholic liturgical ceremonies. These puppets play a central role in staging episodes from the Passion of Christ, such as the “Veneration of the Cross,” the “Holy Burial,” the “Visit to the Sepulcher,” and the “Resurrection” during Holy Week. Using puppets, religious dramas can materialize divine concepts without profaning their sacred content. The article also examines the historical context and the dramatic impact of these puppets in liturgical and theatrical settings, bridging the gap between pre-modern Christianity and the present.
