Truck Art Paintings in Shahi Hammam

10 Oct 2019 , Dehli Gate, Lahore, Pakistan

The Shahi Hammam, (Royal Bath House) is located at Dehli Gate, Lahore, Pakistan, is a prime example of Mughal-era architecture, showcasing advanced hydro-engineering and cultural aesthetics. Built in the 16th century, it served both hygienic and social functions with its elaborate frescoes, stucco work, and sophisticated water heating and drainage systems. The preservation and restoration of this bathhouse offer insights into the daily lives of the Mughal elite, highlighting their artistic taste, leisure activities, and emphasis on cleanliness. Beyond its architectural significance, the Shahi Hammam stands as a cultural heritage site that reflects the fusion of Persian and South Asian influences during that historical period.

Tariq’s prestigious solo exhibition, Jasminum officinale, at the Shahi Hammam, consists of six significant paintings, the surfaces of paintings embraced by the ready-made truck art objects. These objects are used to decorate heavy vehicles such as trucks in Pakistan. Truck art in Pakistan is a vibrant cultural expression that reflects regional identities and showcases the nation’s rich heritage. This form of art in Pakistan has important significance culturally, socially, economically, and aesthetically. Socially, it fosters community bonding and conveys socio-political messages, promoting unity and pride. Economically, it supports artists’ livelihoods, attracts tourists, and boosts business for truck owners. Aesthetically, it transforms vehicles into colorful works of art, highlighting the creativity and innovation of Pakistani artists.

Artist Tayyab Tariq, from Androon Lahore, collected various articles on truck art from the local market, creating a bridge between traditional truck art objects and contemporary painting. His work blends these objects into his paintings, offering a fresh perspective on Pakistani Truck Art. This new presentation highlights the vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and eclectic mix of motifs characteristic of truck art, showcasing the creativity and skill involved in transforming ordinary vehicles into moving works of art.
